From concept to course: Managing online module development with Microsoft 365

Primary speaker:

Anna Limanni, Acting Director, Education Technology Office, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

Additional speaker:

Inga Breede, Manager, Content Production, Education Technology Office, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

Description:

This session showcases the EdTech Office’s six-step module development process for a multi-module project (e.g., Mining Industry Management Program: https://mimp.civmin.utoronto.ca/), highlighting how we partner with instructors and subject matter experts and collaborate across team roles using the Microsoft 365 ecosystem to move projects from concept to final delivery.

While specialized tools such as Articulate 360 and professional video editing and graphic design software support our content creation process, our focus is the project management infrastructure that keeps development organized, transparent and aligned with instructional goals.

We walk participants through each stage of our workflow: (1) sharing the presentation slide deck, (2) recording a “scratch track” presentation, (3) reviewing planning documents, (4) providing structured feedback, (5) recording final videos and (6) reviewing and refining the module.

At each stage, we highlight how Microsoft 365 tools support collaboration and accountability, including: Teams (communication), Bookings (scheduling), Loop (meeting notes), SharePoint (file management), Planner and Project (task tracking and timelines), Forms (feedback collection), Excel (video and graphic production tracking), Word (planning documents) and Clipchamp/Stream (video review).

We demonstrate how intentional tool integration reduces bottlenecks, clarifies roles and supports stakeholders and subject matter experts throughout development. We also briefly situate complementary tools such as Articulate 360 and professional video editing and graphic design software within the broader project ecosystem to show how these production tools connect back to structured planning and tracking workflows.

Interactivity includes:

  • A walkthrough of a sample Planner board and Project timeline
  • A short poll to surface participants’ current workflows
  • Small-group discussion where participants identify opportunities in their own process
  • A downloadable workflow template participants can adapt to their context

Attendees will leave with a replicable framework and practical strategies for using Microsoft 365 to improve efficiency and collaboration in online content production.
