Data stewardship for IT: Who owns the data?

Primary speaker:

Yuliya Cherevko, Assistant Director, Data Governance, Institutional Reporting & Data Governance

Description:

Every system that IT implements creates or holds data, yet after go‑live, accountability for data quality, access, recovery and disposition too often fades into ambiguity. This session shows how to make roles and responsibilities explicit by pairing U of T's Data Management Guidelines with the IT delivery practices you already use.

Using a COBIT‑aligned data lifecycle, you can translate “data questions” into gated checkpoints across requirements, design, build, operations and decommissioning. We’ll focus on relevant sections for IT: data collection for new systems, access management, recovery and disposition with business sign‑off, and share anecdotes of what happens when these aren’t addressed up front. The goal of thinking of data management upfront is to have fewer downstream firefights, clearer ownership and reusable standards that IT leaders can champion within portfolio and project governance.
